Topology of Singular Algebraic Varieties

چکیده
I will discuss recent progress by many people in the program of extending natural topological invariants from manifolds to singular spaces. Intersection homology theory and mixed Hodge theory are model examples of such invariants. The past 20 years have seen a series of new invariants, partly inspired by string theory, such as motivic integration and the elliptic genus of a singular variety. These theories are not defined in a topological way, but there are intriguing hints of their topological significance. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 14F43, 32S35, 58J26.

Equivariant Characteristic Classes of Singular Complex Algebraic Varieties
Homology Hirzebruch characteristic classes for singular varieties have been recently defined by Brasselet-Schürmann-Yokura as an attempt to unify previously known characteristic class theories for singular spaces (e.g., MacPherson-Chern classes, BaumFulton-MacPherson Todd classes, and Goresky-MacPherson L-classes, respectively). In this note we define equivariant analogues of these classes for ...

1. Since the origins of the birational geometry of algebraic varieties cai be traced back to Riemann's theory of algebraic functions, it is not surprising that topological considerations have played a considerable role in the theory of algebraic varieties defined over the field of complex numbers. For instance in the theory of algebraic functions of two complex variables, due mainly tc Picard, ...
متن کاملChapter 1 . Topology of Algebraic Varieties , Hodge Decomposition , and Applications
In this chapter we will review a number of fundamental facts on the topology of smooth complex projective varieties, and the Hodge decomposition of their singular cohomology with complex coefficients. We will then see them in action by proving the Kodaira Vanishing theorem, the invariance of Hodge numbers under deformations, and the birational invariance of certain Hodge numbers. Some basic ref...
